If, like us, you spend hours searching for decoration inspiration, you’ve probably noticed that paneling is gaining real momentum. Our social media feeds are filled with incredible before-and-after transformations, and even our Pinterest boards have embraced this trend. In addition to adding character and texture to spaces, these details help hide or cover imperfections on walls while elevating interior design. And the best part is that they are not an expensive or difficult option to recreate! Perfect, isn’t it?
We’ve also been putting this trend into practice in several projects, one of which is Casa das Avenidas in Lisbon (if you haven’t seen the final result yet, check it out here). The original architecture of this apartment already featured fantastic wall moldings and elaborate ceilings — a classic and even imposing setting that could fill a Pinterest album on its own. However, due to layout changes in the project, we needed to replicate this effect on other walls. And, biased as we may be, the result was simply stunning!
If you’ve also been bitten by this bug and dream of a more classic aesthetic but lack a mansion or an old-style apartment, don’t worry: we’ll help you recreate this look!
Keep reading to discover a step-by-step guide we’ve created to assist you in installing these wall frames, or even better, save this article to always have access to these tips!
Step 1: Inspiration and Planning
First, seek inspiration on websites or social media platforms. Explore different styles of wall frames to discover what best suits your taste and home decor. Create a sketch or detailed plan of the areas you want to transform and how the wall frames will be arranged on the walls, so you have a clear vision before starting any installation.
Step 3: Measurement and Wall Preparation
Before proceeding with the installation, measure the wall where the frames will be placed and calculate the required quantities, placing the frames directly on the wall. Use a laser or a level and mark a reference line with a pencil to ensure the frames will be straight and level. Prepare the wall by ensuring the surface is clean, smooth, and free of imperfections. If necessary, sand any irregularities.
Step 3: Costum Cutting
Cut each frame to the required size based on the measurements needed – depending on the wall and how many frames you want to create – using a saw. If you are not comfortable cutting the pieces yourself, there are specialized stores that offer this service.
Step 5: Installation
With the measurements clearly marked on the walls, you can begin the installation! Use suitable glue or strong adhesive on the back of the panel (and on the wall if necessary) to securely attach the panels. Apply some pressure for the required drying time, always following the planned pattern and design. Don’t forget to check the leveling and alignment of the panels during the installation process, and apply vertical panels first, followed by horizontal ones, to achieve a perfect result.
Step 6: Painting
Ensure all pieces are securely attached and level. After the glue dries, fill any gaps with putty and, if necessary, sand any imperfections to achieve a smooth surface. Then, apply 1 to 2 coats of primer to create a smooth and flawless base layer, and finally, apply two coats of paint in the desired color to achieve the finish you were looking for in your project.
It might seem like a labor-intensive process, but believe us, the result will be worth the effort!
